Controller - Residential Construction & Renovation

Industry: Luxury Residential Construction & Custom Renovation

Location: Main Line, PA (Philadelphia Suburbs)

Position Type: Full-Time / On-Site

Compensation: Competitive Base Salary

ABOUT THE FIRM

We are a premier, fast-growing design, build, and residential renovation firm operating across the regional market. With an energetic, modern, and highly collaborative team of 60+ professionals, we are expanding our operational footprint into a secondary Main Line facility. To lead our finance department through this next phase of scaling, we are seeking a strategic, hands-on Controller to oversee all financial operations, project accounting, financial reporting, and cash flow management.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Controller will serve as the financial leader of the business, reporting directly to executive leadership. This role goes beyond traditional accounting-you will be the guardian of project profitability, gross margins, and financial controls across dozens of high-end renovation and custom build projects. You will manage the finance team, optimize financial workflows, ensure bulletproof job costing, and provide executive leadership with real-time financial reporting to guide strategic growth.

This position requires an assertive, tech-forward financial leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and possesses deep expertise in construction job costing, WIP (Work in Progress) reporting, and margin management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Executive Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Direct all monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, producing timely, accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements for executive review.
  • Oversee corporate cash flow forecasting, treasury management, lines of credit, and capital allocation across active projects and multi-office operations.
  • Develop, monitor, and present key performance indicators (KPIs), financial forecasts, and annual corporate budgets.
2. Advanced Construction Job Costing & Profitability Management

  • Lead the job costing function to ensure real-time tracking of actual vs. budgeted costs across all active custom builds and major renovations ("Are we making money on this project?").
  • Maintain and analyze WIP (Work in Progress) reports, percentage-of-completion accounting, and over/under billing schedules to protect gross margins.
  • Establish strict oversight on project pricing, change order approvals, progress billings, and subcontractor cost allocations.
3. Internal Controls, Audits & Compliance

  • Design, implement, and enforce robust internal financial controls, processes, and policies to protect company assets and maintain data integrity.
  • Manage tax compliance, including multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax, state/local tax filings, and year-end audit/CPA firm coordination.
  • Oversee insurance policies, worker's compensation audits, subcontractor compliance (insurance/lien waivers), and banking relationships.
4. Team Management & Operational Optimization

  • Lead, mentor, and elevate the internal accounting team (AP, AR, Payroll, and Bookkeeping).
  • Leverage and evaluate modern cloud-based construction accounting ERPs and project management software to automate manual processes and scale workflows efficiently.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Estimators to drive financial accountability across all field and office operations.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience: 7-10+ years of progressive accounting leadership, with at least 3+ years as a Controller, Accounting Manager, or Senior Construction Accountant within the residential construction, commercial build, or specialty trade industries.
  • Education & Credentials: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA, Master's in Accounting, or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional) preferred.
  • Core Technical Expertise: Mastery of Construction Job Costing, WIP Schedules, Percentage-of-Completion Accounting, Change Order Controls, and Draw/Progress Billings.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency with modern construction ERP systems (e.g., Sage 100/300 Contractor, Buildertrend, QuickBooks Online, CoConstruct, or similar) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (financial modeling, data aggregation).
  • Leadership & Culture Fit: Thrives in a fast-paced, high-velocity, modern environment. Possesses exceptional leadership, communication, and decision-making skills to match an energetic, high-growth team.
